“Who are you?”
Ruiz turned sharply, a sheepish grin — his best feature, on full display as he confronted the irate female voice interrupting his midnight fridge foraging. He couldn’t see her clearly as the kitchen was dark, but she could see him in the refrigerator's light.
She gasped and stepped away from him. “I don’t know you.” Her voice took on a worried edge. “You aren’t one of the estate guards.”
Ruiz had arrived a few hours earlier when most of the household had already gone to bed. It disappointed him that he couldn’t see his sister right away, but Nic was insistent that Ruiz should wait until morning. Apparently, Maria needed her rest. From what, Ruiz refused to speculate on.
He’d been ushered into the house and shown to a room with an attached bathroom, something much fancier than he’d ever used. Two hours later, he still couldn’t settle enough to catch some shuteye. The 2:00 AM munchies had him making his way down to the kitchen. Or at least he’d attempted to find the kitchen. It had taken him about fifteen minutes and a few wrong turns before he found his way.
In fact, now that he thought about it, he was worried he wouldn’t be able to find his way back and end up in someone else’s room. He squinted at the shadowy woman standing across from him. He could see bare legs and arms poking out of a nightgown. Long, sleep-tousled hair flowed over her shoulders.
Maybe ending up in someone else’s room wouldn’t be such a bad thing.
“If you don’t start talking, I will stab you.” She crossed her arms and tapped a bare foot against the tiled floor.
A waft of something sweet and spicy tickled his nostrils. Perfume? Shampoo? He didn’t know what it was, but his dick sure liked it.
“What will you stab me with, chiquita?”
“This is a kitchen,” she said scornfully. “There are knives in kitchens.”
“Si,” he agreed. “But I’m currently standing between you and the butcher block.”
She gasped. “Is that a threat?”
“I believe the only person doing any threatening here is you,” he pointed out. “I’m an innocent, picking up a nighttime snack while you’re sneaking around, threatening to stab a starving man. Not very hospitable.”
